Labthink to Exhibit at Smithers Plastics & Paper for Food Contact Packaging 2026

Labthink is pleased to announce its participation as an exhibitor at Smithers' Plastics & Paper for Food Contact Packaging 2026, taking place on 8–10 December 2026 in Vienna, Austria.

Plastics & Paper for Food Contact Packaging is more than just a conference - it is a gathering of likeminded professionals looking to address all topical concerns in the food contact industry and develop their knowledge on how to best comply with the latest regulations for plastic and paper packaging in contact with food.

The scope of this event is much broader than just plastics and paper, with insight into:

  • The latest legislation
  • Compliance case studies and pertinent issues of food packaging
  • Plus information on inks, coatings and adhesives

Confirmed speakers for 2026 include Triskelion, European Commission, OFI – Austrian Research Institute, BASF, Hubergroup, PETCORE Europe, Plastics Europe and many more.

Automating Overall Migration Testing for Food Contact Materials

Labthink will highlight its C840 Integrated Evaporation Residue Testing System, designed to automate key gravimetric operations for Overall Migration and related testing applications. Integrating controlled evaporation, precision weighing and automated data processing, theC840 helps laboratories improve testing efficiency, consistency and data traceability. It supports applications related to EN 1186 and EU food contact requirements.

Comprehensive Quality Control for Stretch Wrap Film Performance

Image
Stretch wrap film has become an indispensable packaging solution globally, used to tightly secure goods for efficient transportation and reliable storage. Its versatility stems from its unique properties: lightweight yet strong, highly elastic, self-adhesive, and capable of conforming to any shape without damaging the contents. Produced through advanced cast film extrusion processes, these films boast excellent tensile performance, tear and puncture resistance, high transparency, superior self-adhesiveness, and impressive retraction rates, ensuring packages remain compact and secure. From chemical raw materials and food products to electromechanical goods and textiles, stretch wrap film provides crucial protection, with specialized types like PE (eco-friendly) and PVC (specific uses) catering to diverse needs. The Imperative of Quality Control Given its critical role in safeguarding products throughout the supply chain, the consistent quality of stretch wrap film is paramount. Manufa...

Case Study: Oxygen Barrier Properties of Recycled PET Bottles

Image
Recycling plastic bottles is vital for environmental protection, but it can affect their oxygen barrier properties, making them less suitable for oxygen-sensitive products. Our case study on PET bottles with varying amounts of recycled material found that increasing the recycled content from 25% to 50% only slightly reduced their oxygen barrier. This suggests that using more recycled material does not significantly compromise the bottles' performance. The Problem The growing trend of recycling waste plastic bottles requires an understanding of how reclaimed materials affect a product's performance. For PET bottles, a crucial metric is their ability to act as an oxygen barrier. High oxygen permeability can compromise the quality of packaged goods, limiting the use of recycled materials in food and beverage containers. This study aims to quantify that effect by testing bottles with varying percentages of recycled content. The Test Two types of PET bottle samples were tested...

How to Test Oxygen Permeability of Food Packaging According to ASTM D3985 Standard

Image
How to Test Oxygen Permeability of Food Packaging According to ASTM D3985 Standard   Oxygen transmission rate is a crucial indicator for evaluating the barrier properties of packaging materials. For food packaging, excellent oxygen barrier performance is essential to ensure food safety and effectively extend shelf life. ASTM D3985, "Standard Test Method for Oxygen Gas Transmission Rate Through Plastic Film and Sheeting Using a Coulometric Sensor," is a standard test method that employs the coulometric sensor principle to measure the oxygen transmission rate of plastic films, sheeting, laminates, paper-plastic composites, plastic-coated fabrics, and similar materials. This evaluation helps determine the packaging material's ability to block oxygen, ensuring food remains unaffected by oxygen throughout its shelf life. Understanding the Coulometric Sensor Method The coulometric sensor method involves clamping the test specimen (the food packaging material) into a per...
